In November 2020 we moved into a 1960s built bungalow with one old electric storage heater. one old gas fire, an electric shower and immersion heater and old double glazing. It did have cavity wall insulation and a minimal layer of loft insulation.

In the last 4 years we have built a modern, well insulated extension with underfloor heating and installed:

an air-source heat pump for heating and hot water, with appropriate radiators throughout the original building

solar pv panels

Lo-carbon through the wall heat recovery fans in bathroom and kitchen

increased insulation in the loft

replaced double glazing in old part of the building

papered the internal surface of external walls with graphite impregnated polystyrene paper to improve wall insulation

invested in heavy curtains for the lounge.

We have also put in plenty of rain butts and a large rain water tank, a hot composter to better manage garden and kitchen waste and built raised beds using waste building material.
